As the country’s main maritime training institution, SMA offers a full range of maritime diplomas and specialist diplomas, Certificate of Competency (CoC) courses as well as Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) courses. Their courses are infused with technological perspectives that increase their relevance in today’s world.
Their resources range from state-of-the-art simulators in navigation, communication, cargo-handling and ship’s engine to sophisticated electrical, electronics and IT-based shipping commerce & trading laboratories. SMA’s Poly Marina houses our seamanship training centre equipped with canoes, yachts, boats and lifeboats.
Strong collaborations with the industry saw the setting up of several highly sophisticated facilities. Their partnership with SMTC Global Inc resulted in the establishment of the SMA-SMTC Safety Training Centre (SSSTC) which offers safety training and specialised off-shore courses at Poly Marina. The Simulation@SMARTFORCE at the Integrated Simulation Centre (ISC) was launched in partnership with FORCE Technology, Denmark and houses the latest cutting-edge simulators. SMA’s collaboration with SingTel allowed for the set-up of SatCom@SMA, a maritime satellite communication centre, linked to the Bukit Timah Earth Station.
SMA has played an important role in providing quality maritime education and training for more than 55 years. The education received in SMA will prepare the next generation workforce in the maritime industry with technical competencies, industry knowledge, overseas exposure and character development through the purposefully-designed curriculum and activities beyond the classroom.
The numerous awards accorded to SMA signify the strong endorsements by the maritime industry on SMA’s programmes. The most recent award clinched by SMA was the Seatrade Asia Awards 2011 for The Education and Training category. SMA had been awarded the Seatrade Asia Awards 2008 for Education and Training, and Seatrade Awards 2009 (London) in Investment In People – High Commendation.
