Eletrobras is the biggest company of the electric power sector in Latin America and the leader of a system consisting of six subsidiary companies, six distribution companies, the Electric Power Research Center (Eletrobras Cepel) and Eletrobas Participações S.A. (Eletrobras Eletropar) and is also holder of 50 percent of the capital stock of Itaipu Binacional.
Eletrobras is responsible for 35.5 percent of Brazil’s total generation capacity, by means of 37 hydroelectric plants, 120 thermoelectric plants, three wind farms and two thermonuclear plants. Eletrobras is responsible for 61,534 km of transmission lines and 257 substations. Eletrobras is responsible for the execution of the National Electrical Energy Conservation Program (Procel), with the purpose of promoting the rational use of power energy and fighting waste. The program has funds from the Global Reversion Reserve and funds from international entities, such as UNO and World Bank. The Distribution Board of Officers has as goals the union of management, reducing operational costs and incorporate strategic planning of the distribution companies of Eletrobras, enabling gains in scale and optimization of efforts.
