The Evolving Role of Gas in the Global Energy Mix Factsheet

12.06.2018 / Energyboardroom

Global energy demand will increase dramatically over the next 20 years, with natural gas playing an ever larger role in the global energy mix, as the below chart shows.

Gas stands as one of the most cost-effective fuels available, with combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plants far cheaper to establish than the alternatives. Additionally, gas synchronizes with power grids and comes online far faster than coal, as the below chart demonstrates.

Gas is also far better for the environment compared to coal, with negligible SO2 and PM2.5 emissions. The use of natural gas is helping to implement global climate change objectives.
